Principal's Message
Educators are stars that guide children so they develop a love for learning.
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” - William Butler Yeats
Our teachers are dedicated to igniting that fire, leading students to a discovery of their passion in life. Here at Hartshorn, we believe in educating each child socially, emotionally, academically, and physically. We hold all aspects of a child’s education in high regard and our staff works diligently to provide the most comprehensive educational experience.
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi
Our educators serve as exemplary models for our students. Our faculty, parents and students go to great lengths to help others in our local communities and beyond. Kindness, courtesy and respect abound at Hartshorn School. We strive to create an optimal environment so that the acquisition and embodiment of positive character are sure to take root.
When we start with ourselves, the cycle of building a better future begins. We aim to build an outstanding foundation for these children who will carry these virtues when they leave us.
As Paul Tough noted in his book, How Children Succeed – Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, “regardless of how dire a child’s circumstances are, how dysfunctional their family is, or low socio-economic status, a single person’s influence, their belief in the child, can literally change the course of that child’s life. It awakens their spirit and the child believes they are destined for greater things. Someone cares for them and they start to care. The power of one person’s influence profoundly changes another’s life.”
When all other things can be taken away, the character of the individual remains intact. Virtues that are embodied cannot be taken away. That is a powerful and empowering feeling for children.
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Whether you attend Hartshorn School or not, whether you are an adult or child, whether you live in America or abroad, please join us in serving others and being the best you can be.
Yours truly,
Debra Ostrowski
