Superintendent's Statement on Acts of Hate

May 25, 2021

Dear Millburn Staff and Families,

In light of concerns about a recent surge in hate-crimes and anti-semitism around the nation and in local communities, I want to remind you that the Millburn Schools condemn and denounce hate and bias in any form.  They have no place in our schools or in our community.

The District Administration and Board of Education are deeply committed to continuing our work on anti-bias and diversity in our elementary, middle, and high schools. Our 2020-2021 District Goal #3 is paramount in enhancing teaching and learning for the success of all students:

The District will …  continue to develop, integrate practices and district calendars to address global awareness, cultural responsiveness, and diversity in our schools.”

This builds upon an earlier version of this goal to “...eliminate bias language and expression, and to increase the awareness of cultural diversity and global awareness in response to the growing changes in our demographics toward a more inclusive culture in our schools.”

As a school district and a supportive community, we have a responsibility to have open conversations about bias, prejudice and hate.  Our district goal has been intentional in this work to form a climate of belonging and empathy.  This work is not new…it is ongoing and it is part of a long-term plan that we take with us into the start of every academic year.  We must equip our students with the tools to bring unity and acceptance into their future.  I assure you we will not rest in this mission.

As just one example, Millburn Middle School has just earned recognition as a No Place for Hate School for the 2nd straight year. No Place for Hate® is an initiative of the Anti-Defamation League offered to schools who commit to instituting programs that combat bias and bullying, while fostering a culture of respect and creating a safe, and inclusive learning environment for all students.

I commit to you that we will continue to provide a culture of kindness, inclusion and safety in all in all of our schools.
